B's-Hawks: Let the Stanley Cup Finals begin - Boston Herald

The Bruins got their opponent last night and the NHL got an Original Six special for the Stanely Cup finals.

The Chicago Blackhawks beat the LA Kings, 4-3, in overtime last night to earn the right to face the Bruins. It is the NHL's first Original Six meeting in its premier event in 34 years, since the Canadiens and Rangers met. The B's will go for their second Cup in three years while the Blackhawks vie for their second in four.

The series starts Wednesday night in Chicago and here is the series breakdown:

Game 1: Wednesday at Chicago, 8 p.m. (Ch. 7)

Game 2: Saturday at Chicago, 8 p.m. (NBC Sports Network)

Game 3: Monday, June 17, at Boston, 8 p.m. (NBC Sports Network)

Game 4: Wednesday, June 19, at Boston, 8 p.m. (Ch. 7)

Game 5 (if necessary): Saturday, June 22, at Chicago, 8 p.m. (Ch. 7)

Game 6 (if necessary): Monday, June 24, at Boston, 8 p.m. (Ch. 7)

Game 7 (if necessary): Wednesday, June 26, at Chicago, 8 p.m. (Ch. 7)

The Blackhawks and Bruins haven't met in a series since 1978. They didn't play this year due to the shortened season only pitting conference foes against each other. The last time they played was Oct. 15, 2011, when the Bruins won in a shootout. Tim Thomas was in goal for Boston and Tyler Seguin scored the only shootout goal.

Just like the Bruins, the Blackhawks barely escaped a series this postseason, trailing the Red Wings, 3-1, and trailing Game 6 in Detroit in the third period. They survived, as did the Bruins, who trailed Toronto, 4-1, in the third period of Game 7 in the first round.

Chicago, like Boston, has much of its 2010 Cup-winning roster still intact. The Blackhawks were far and away the best team in the regular season, notching a league-high 77 points and posting a 36-7-5 record. They finished with 15 points more than the Bruins.

Regardless of the regular season, oth teams come into this Cup final playing their best hockey.
